Last week Liberate Liberty published, “Mortal Gods: “HVT”: Reality Intertwined with Fiction,” which provided real-life references for some elements of the story. Here are two more real-life technology news references (one recent and the other old) that relate to story elements within “HVT.” You might consider the second of these references as a potential spoiler for the story.

DARPA issued a press release on April 27 that described how it is researching ways to allow humans to learn faster than normal.

DARPA announced the Targeted Neuroplasticity Training, or TNT, program last March, and work now has begun on the effort to discover the safest and most effective ways to activate a natural process called “synaptic plasticity.”

There is nothing in “HVT” about anyone with a superhuman ability to learn at an increased rate. But the protagonist of the story is a superhuman individual. And so news about scientific advancements towards creating superhuman abilities is always noteworthy with regards to the Mortal Gods universe.

The second real-life reference is about space diving. If you want to know how this factors into “HVT” you have to read the story.

Mortal Gods: “HVT” is a short story meant to entertain the reader. But it also provides a thought-provoking plot by taking contemporary issues, and combining them with emerging technologies and placing them in a universe where superhuman individuals exist.
